M. K. Aleja is a CHamoru author whose work has received two "Get It" ratings from Kirkus Reviews and three Gold Book Awards from Literary Titan. His novels—spanning historical fiction, supernatural thriller, and dark fantasy—center Pacific Islander stories and have earned 5-star reviews from The Historical Fiction Company, Readers' Favorite, and Literary Titan.

His debut novel, GUARDIANS OF THE LATTE STONES (historical fiction, 80,000 words), explores the Japanese occupation of Guam through the perspective of a conflicted young Japanese soldier who witnesses atrocities while trying to protect CHamoru civilians. The novel has been unofficially endorsed by Dr. Anne Perez Hattori, Professor of Pacific Studies at the University of Guam, as doing "historical justice to Guam's war experience."

THE MAKANA'S LEGACY (supernatural thriller, 80,000 words) follows a young Chamorro man blessed with the spiritual gifts of ancient healers who were eradicated during Spanish colonization. The novel blends indigenous spirituality with contemporary thriller elements and is the first in a planned trilogy. Books Two, THE YO'AMTE'S REMORSE, and Three, TEARS OF THE ANITI, are currently in development.

M. K. Aleja's most recent work, "THE SIREN'S DAUGHTER" (dark fantasy short story), is a retelling of the CHamoru legend of Sirena and has received a Literary Titan Gold Book Award.

As a #OwnVoices CHamoru author, M. K. Aleja brings authentic perspective to Pacific Islander narratives—a significantly underrepresented voice in American publishing. He is half CHamoru and half Mexican, born and raised in Guam where he lived for 45 of his 55 years. His work has been featured in the Pacific Daily News, Marianas Variety, and Guam Daily Post.

M. K. Aleja holds a BA in Marketing and an MA in Organizational Management. He has taught at the University of Guam and currently resides in Alaska.

**Currently seeking representation** for THE YO'AMTE'S REMORSE and the complete YO'AMTE Trilogy, as well as THE RAGE, a standalone WWII supernatural horror novel set in Japanese occupied Guam.

THE MAKÅNA'S LEGACY

BY MK Aleja • POSTED ON March 3, 2025

Aleja’s novel fuses psychological horror, paranormal fantasy, and CHamoru folklore to follow a Guam family’s battle with malevolent spirits.

The people of Guam have a rich history and culture, one influenced by wisdom-filled stories extolling the physical and spiritual benefits of being connected to the earth, as well as revering and employing insights passed down from ancestors. But much of that knowledge has been lost, and when a young pregnant woman named Joleen finds herself haunted by an evil taotaomo’na (spirit of the land), she and her widowed mother, Annie, turn to unconventional methods for guidance. Contacting a suruhåna (a traditional healer) doesn’t help, and Joleen dies, but not before giving birth to a son named Mateo. Annie, a devout Catholic who also believes in the old ways, realizes her grandson possesses special abilities and vows to protect him from the evil spirits. As Mateo grows up, he discovers that his innate talents are those of a traditional shaman—and that those talents are coveted by some of the most powerful and nightmarish spirits on the island. The exploration of the CHamoru belief system and its legends are an obvious strength of Aleja’s novel, but so too are the deep character development and relationship dynamics, like the loving bond between Mateo and his grandmother. The impressively high level of tension throughout the story is also noteworthy, particularly the adept use of psychological horror elements to keep readers on the edge of their seats. In one scene, a humble cupboard door is rendered terrifying: “Mateo spun around, his pulse thundering in his ears. The cupboard door, which he distinctly remembered closing earlier, was now wide open, its contents perfectly still. A wave of nausea swept over him as he stepped toward the door, his body screaming at him to leave.”

Readers who enjoy folkloric fiction will find this Micronesian-based story highly entertaining.

GUARDIANS OF THE LATTE STONES

BY MK Aleja • POSTED ON July 11, 2024

A Japanese soldier encounters unforeseen enemies in Aleja’s supernatural war novel.

Seventeen-year-old Yoshida Takeshi hopes that joining the Japanese army will free him from the poverty and abuse of his aunt and uncle’s home. Perhaps by serving his country, he can make enough money to support himself and his younger sister Yuki. The only complication: There’s a war going on—the Japanese empire against the United States—and his service may require him to die honorably for the emperor. He and his unit are sent to the island of Omiyajima (previously known as Guam), a beautiful paradise—at least until the war takes its toll. Bombs flatten the jungle and his comrades commit atrocities against the local Chamorro people. Takeshi participates as little as he can manage without attracting attention to himself, but he knows what they are doing is wrong—and some hidden force on the island appears to agree. Invisible enemies attack the Japanese soldiers from the forest, leaving strange marks on those able to escape. With American battleships threatening from the ocean and mysterious attacks coming from the island, Takeshi turns to a Japanese-speaking Chamorro named Elena for help. But is it too late for those who have offended the spirit ancestors of Guam? Aleja’s smooth prose expertly builds tension, as here when Takeshi gets his first taste of the forest threat: “The trees began to move around Takeshi again. The strain in his eyes caused him to rub the water from them. Each time he did so, something seemed to encircle him, watching him. It moved through the branches like a snake, not like a man.” Not exactly a mystery or a horror yarn, the story powerfully explores the tremendous capacity of humans to be inhumane, even outside the context of the war. Aleja cleverly tells the story of Japanese-occupied Guam in an unexpected way that captures the tragic destruction of militarism.

An atmospheric story of war and loss.
