The Great Gatsby was Fitzgerald’s third full novel, published before Kirkus Reviews was founded. Tender Is the Night (1934) was the novel that succeeded Gatsby. Kirkus gave it a solid review, but certainly not one you would expect for a novel by such a now-iconic American novelist. Fitzgerald’s reputation has grown over the decades, and it is interesting to look at how he and his new book were viewed almost 80 years ago.
