The Moffats might well be called the modern 5 little Peppers. One has the same absorbed interest in the family, as a family, and with successive books, the personalities of the individual members of the family come more and more alive. This book is Rufus M's book, and it starts out with the story of how he got his name and how he took his first book out of the Library. He is a beguiling youngster, not unlike the Ulysses of The Human Comedy. And the stories about his contribution to the family, from the coins he found under the ice to the beans that grew in spite of his too loving care are delightful reading. An hour spent with the Moffats is fun for all ages. And the Louis Slobodkin pictures are just right.
