KIRKUS REVIEW

No togas or frat boys will be found in this particular animal house, though plenty of hijinks take place within. Jeremy always has an excuse for why things go wrong for him in class. Either his snailbox devoured the class plant or his vulchair ate his homework. His teacher, Mrs. Nuddles, decides to pay a housecall to Jeremy’s gorvilla to suss out the truth. What she finds is a wacky home full of everything from hampsters to refrigergators. In the end, the teacher has to agree that Jeremy’s is a dangerous, if exciting, place to be. Ryan has so much fun coming up with increasingly ridiculous wildlife that it’s to Hale’s credit that his fine-tipped acrylics can keep up with the punny pandemonium. Placed as the antagonist from the start, Mrs. Nuddles could stand to look a little more severe in the pictures, as the text makes her out to be a judgmental foil. That said, if you’re looking for a kind of crazed companion to Graeme Base’s Animalia (1986), this book will stand up to multiple rereadings. (Picture book. 4-8)
