Church’s latest is a reassuring nighttime book with a twist that parents can appreciate. Madison Mouse gets ready for bed with no argument, but once the routine of books and hugs is done and Mommy has left the room, she finds she needs “just one last thing.” Three trips later, Madison has Molly Mouse for company, a drink and an extra blanket, her wooly hat to block out noises and for each trip, another hug from Mom. The fourth time, Madison asks for one last hug. An exhausted Mommy gives it to her, but falls asleep before Madison can complete her request for “just one more thing.” Church’s collage, brush and ink illustrations are just plain adorable and ideally suited to the youngest listeners. The three media blend well, and bold outlines and simple patterns and backgrounds eliminate extraneous detail, while the facial expressions on the mice speak volumes. Bedtime procrastinators and their exhausted parents are sure to sit through just one more reading. (Picture book. 3-6)
