When perky Lizette, a duck, goes for a walk, she finds one pretty, green sock and puts it on. Tom and Tim, cat brothers, tease her, saying socks come in pairs, so where’s the other one. She searches for the mate, even checking with Mr. Fish in the pond, but no luck. Back home, her mom washes the sock and hangs it up to dry where Lizette’s best friend, Bert, a mouse, sees it and wants it for a cap. Meanwhile, the cats find the second sock, taunt Lizette and Bert, and drop it in the pond, but mom has knitted a new sock/cap so the pair of friends has a matching pair of caps. Happiest of all, though, is Mr. Fish, who now has a comb, watering can and a splendid sleeping bag. The cunning, quick-sketch watercolor illustrations carry the story, focusing on the simply drawn characters. Lizette in her blue kerchief and yellow-dotted dress and Bert in a blue plaid coat provide light whimsy in this somewhat offbeat friendship story first published in France. (Picture book. 4-7)
