The Runner ($26.95; Mar. 7; 448 pp.; 0-385-33366-8): The second thriller from Reich (Numbered Account, 1997) takes

us into a devastated Germany in the years immediately following WWII, where the American ex-cop Devlin Judge is searching

for Nazi war criminal Erich Seyss, recently escaped from an American POW camp. Seyss, a former Olympic track star known

as the "White Lion," was responsible for the death of Judge’s brother, and he and Judge carry on a cat-and-mouse chase across

the length of Europe that ends up having political as well as personal ramifications.
