A little hedgehog named Quentin lives in the forest, but has a dream to see the sun. One day he decides that building a tree house will be the best way to accomplish his goal. In the face of much pessimism from some of the forest folk and a wolf who has targeted him for a tasty dinner, Quentin perseveres. But since he can’t do it all himself, he finds that bartering skills with the other animals gets his work done. It’s nice that Quentin lets his friends help him, but it is odd that he does none of the actual building himself and he always seems to get the easier job in the exchange. Wilhelm’s illustrations are simple and sweet, but offer little visual surprises. Young readers will most likely find this plot-driven tale entertaining enough, but it’s not an essential purchase.
