Munching breakfast of cereal and fruit, a child ruminates about how different animals eat, many of them--puppies, a toy monkey, a squirrel spied through a window--suggested in the realistic first picture. Then imagination takes flight as the child is shown swinging through a banana grove with monkeys, sipping nectar with hummingbirds, cracking shellfish with a family of otters, or lapping from a bowl of milk with the puppies. The simple idea is nicely realized in Sloat's bright, charmingly detailed illustrations, which vary the child's size in accordance with the animal companions. (Picture book. 3-6)
