IT'S THE BEAR!

Kids like to be proven right and Alborough (coauthor of Big Bear's Treasury, Vol. II, 1992, etc.) does just that. Eddie doesn't want to go on a picnic in the woods because he is afraid of ``the great big bear that lives in there.'' His mother, of course, just laughs at his childhood fears and leaves him alone with the food while she goes back for a forgotten blueberry pie. Just as she disappears, who should appear but the bear? Eddie quickly hides in the empty picnic basket that the bear uses as a seat while he partakes of his meal. The bear is about to start on dessert, which could be Eddie, when Eddie's mother returns. But she still doesn't see the bear standing behind her. The young reader can breathe a sigh of relief when the bear makes his presence known to all by helping himself to the blueberry pie. Alborough's colorful illustrations comically portray a child's fears. The bear, though cuddly, is enormous, emphasizing the terror that exists in the woods of a child's mind.
