Another jolly episode in the life and times of fey-filled Maggody, Arkansas (Strangled Prose, etc.), where Arly Hanks is police chief and her mother Ruby Bee runs the local bar and grill. This time, the big news in town is a fancy, brand-new supermarket owned by Major Bob Buchanon and smooth outsider Lamont Petrel. Its opening ceremonies are marred by some mild cases of food poisoning, but a much more serious incident follows, killing widower Buzz Miluin's mother and sending Buzz and small son Martin to the hospital Meanwhile, Petrel has disappeared as reports fly around town that he's a rapist. Brother Verber is about to have some of his nasty sins exposed, and the rumor mill is in full cry as Arly slowly begins to understand what's behind it all. It's not a happy discovery, and this latest chapter of the brash, bawdy Maggody chronicles ends on a somber note. The mixture as before--fun but a touch over frantic this time round.
