KIRKUS REVIEW

A sobering, well-balanced account of five ethnic groups living outside the industrial system. The Yanomami of the Amazon, the San of the Kalahari desert, the Bambuti of the Ituri forest, aboriginal Australians, and Inuits are all sympathetically but realistically described; Liptak clearly outlines the depredations of outsiders but also criticizes films like The Gods Must Be Crazy for promoting overly optimistic views of traditional peoples' prospects. Debunking romantic myths, she convincingly provides facts and interpretations from both well-known scientists (e.g., Dr. Napoleon Chagnon) and reputable journalists. The b&w photos included are evocative and informative. A fascinating and useful resource, for adults as well as the target audience. List of organizations interested in these peoples' problems; source notes; extensive bibliography; index. (Nonfiction. 12+)
