This thematically arranged collection of 29 Christian prayers, first published in Great Britain, includes many traditional prayers that parents or Sunday School teachers might select to use for religious education. The collection begins with the Lord’s Prayer, entitled within the text as, “The Prayer that Jesus Taught.” The version used as the text is from the Church of England, which differs slightly but noticeably from the most common versions used in U.S. churches. Other well-known prayers include the 23rd Psalm, “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” and the prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. A short prayer by Mother Teresa and Irish and Gaelic blessings provide some geographical variety, but there is no representation of Christian cultures in other parts of the world, including North or South America. Additional prayers are interpretations of Bible verses or short, original poems by the author. Pleasant, softly shaded illustrations in watercolor and pencil show children of different age groups and races interacting with their families and, in two illustrations, with Jesus and his flock of sheep.
