The only thing left from the fire that destroyed their home is Carla’s copy of A Pilgrim Thanksgiving, and as they move into their new apartment, Carla uses her book as an inspiration for the best Thanksgiving celebration ever. The apartments in her new building are small, so it seems that her dreams of a giant holiday feast are hopeless. Even her mother is sure that the idea’s impossible, giving her usual answer: “Fat chance,” but Carla is determined to find a way. She enlists the help of her classmate and neighbor Julio, and together they convince the building manager and other neighbors to celebrate the holiday together in the lobby. On the day of the feast, the table is brimming with all kinds of dishes, from the traditional holiday fare to arroz con pollo and Irish stew.
