Harlequin Teen’s debut series, Soul Screamers, starts off with a bang. This first volume introduces readers to the likable and willful Kaylee Cavanaugh. Kaylee’s life has gotten super strange ever since she realized that she sees shadows surrounding people who are going to die and feels an almost irresistible compulsion to utter a lengthy, bloodcurdling scream when death arrives. Kaylee is confused and distraught until she is let in on some secrets that her family has kept from her. Truth comes in the form of hunky Nash Hudson, who informs Kaylee, in between steamy kissing scenes, that neither she nor he is exactly human. They are béan sidhes, or banshees, and together they can put a dying soul back in its body—for a price. Kaylee confronts her family, learns about her history and her power and, with the help of Nash and her family, figures out why several beautiful young girls have dropped dead from no obvious causes. Plenty of paranormal thrills, mystery and sexy first-base–only romance. Twilight fans will love it; more discerning readers will think it ridiculous, but what do they know? (Supernatural romance. YA)
