KIRKUS REVIEW

Little Rex is at that tender age when all he wants is for everyone else to see him as big. He wants to be the scariest, loudest, meanest dinosaur in the whole world, and he tries every way he can to get all his relatives and friends to see him in that light. But they still call him little Rex. One day, his parents ask him to look after their eggs while they go for a swim. He agrees, since it is a big, important job, but while they are away, the eggs begin to hatch. As soon as the babies see Rex, they are terrified—“He’s so big!” And finally, Rex sees the value of being just the size he is and not the loudest or meanest or scariest. “All Rex wanted to be was the best dinosaur big brother in the whole world.” There is nothing at all scary about Julian’s marshmallowy, anthropomorphized dinosaurs, especially beady-eyed little Rex. The bright colors, large spreads and dinosaur theme have appeal for the target audience, but it doesn't really plow new ground. (Picture book. 3-6)
