Estrellita marvels at the wonders of the big city after arriving in Brooklyn from her small Puerto Rican community. On the phone with her Abuelita, she describes the noisy and fun-filled subway ride to Manhattan, the subway’s underground city with street musicians and food stands, Fifth Avenue’s hustle and bustle, the soaring tall buildings and giant, foot-long hotdogs. Estrellita’s adventure continues as she travels by car back to Brooklyn, viewing the expansive Verrazano Bridge and arriving at the barrio where the music, food and lifestyle are as familiar as her hometown. Torrecilla’s full-page illustrations in marker and opaque-toned gouache provide a trendy, almost graphic-novel–style view of the city that revels in architectural extremes; they sit opposite well-balanced bilingual texts separated by smaller scenes of Abuelita in the tranquility of a Puerto Rican beachfront setting. The dialogue format reflects Estrellita’s enthusiasm as she acclimates to a new life in a blended culture. A strong second outing for Dillard and J.D.
Breakout kid barber J.D. embraces a summer of opportunity.
Readers met J.D. Jones just as he took his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi, by storm, winning himself community acclaim and a chair at the revered Hart and Sons barbershop in series opener J.D. and the Great Barber Battle(2021). What’s next for the haircut prodigy? School’s just getting out, and there’s so much life happening outside—if only one can escape home learning with the grandparents. J.D.’s sister, Vanessa, brings along multitalented mutual friend Jessyka to share an ambitious challenge: “Let’s start a YouTube channel!” Can they get millions of views and wow the whole world? They are already amazing at haircuts and hairstyles—all they need is to learn how to make a great YouTube video. The story models strategies for scripting short videos reflecting the templates of viral YouTube hair tutorials, inviting readers to not only see the journey of the characters, but maybe also practice these skills at home. Told from the point of view of two warring siblings, this could have been an engaging first chapter book. Unfortunately, the length makes it less likely to appeal to the intended audience. Jessie and Evan are usually good friends as well as sister and brother. But the news that bright Jessie will be skipping a grade to join Evan’s fourth-grade class creates tension. Evan believes himself to be less than clever; Jessie’s emotional maturity doesn’t quite measure up to her intelligence. Rivalry and misunderstandings grow as the two compete to earn the most money in the waning days of summer. The plot rolls along smoothly and readers will be able to both follow the action and feel superior to both main characters as their motivations and misconceptions are clearly displayed. Indeed, a bit more subtlety in characterization might have strengthened the book’s appeal. The final resolution is not entirely believable, but the emphasis on cooperation and understanding is clear. Earnest and potentially successful, but just misses the mark. (Fiction. 8-10)
