A bunny overcomes his anxiety through mindful breathing in Jubert’s picture book.
Brave Mighty Bun Bun is a fearless adventurer, often “Hunting for danger, and seeking big thrills,” but Stressed Little Bun Bun cries when they’re apart, wishing that his brother would “stay, stay, stay.” One day, the Bun Buns find a message in a bottle, containing a note about a treasure hunt. Brave Mighty Bun Bun sets off while Stressed Little Bun Bun waits, until receiving word that his brother’s in trouble. Here, the narration directly asks readers for help reminding Little Bun Bun to “breathe.” Throughout, the character effectively manages terrifying events with various types of mindful breathing, each with illustrated instructions. When Little Bun Bun discovers Brave Mighty Bun Bun frozen in fear by a growling lion, he remembers “Dragon breathing” and scares the lion away. Orozco’s bold, brightly hued cartoon illustrations use clean lines and shading for added dimensionality. The contrast between the adorable brothers’ personalities is evident throughout, and the text’s musical cadence gives the story a comforting quality. The rhymes sometimes feel forced, and the abrupt switches from third to second person are initially disorienting. However, the strong story overcomes these issues, and adult caregivers will enjoy practicing the breathing techniques with the kids in their care.
Essential reading to comfort and empower anxious young readers.
