KIRKUS REVIEW

Younger children who like mysteries will enjoy searching for clues in this lighthearted Christmas mystery. The main character is Little Santa, a mischievous, elf-like fellow in the tomte or tomten tradition of Scandinavian mythology. He has planned his annual treat for his group of forest friends, including two reindeer wearing collars with magical silver bells. When the reindeer bells vanish, the animals search throughout the forest, following footprints and finding clues until they discover Little Santa and their treat: an immense evergreen decorated with bows and bells. Each spread illustrating the search contains one tiny clue to Little Santa’s presence: a glimpse of his pointed hat, the glow of his lantern or a dropped mitten. These clues aren’t noticeable right away; closer inspection reveals a tiny cluster of snowflakes near each clue, pointing the way. The illustrations of the snow-covered forest alternate between moonlit beauty and spooky darkness full of peeping animal eyes with just the right sense of suspense. Though the actual mystery is slight, the clever clues, simple language and attractive illustrations make this accessible to children just beginning to understand the concepts of mystery.
