KIRKUS REVIEW

From "1 woolly hat" to "10 marshmallows in Penguin's hot chocolate," a little penguin celebrates one snowy day. Wood's soft-edged illustrations depict a rotund penguin and his or her friends, all clad in hats, scarves and earmuffs playing in the snow. Foil snowflakes add a little bit of shine to this blue-and-pink pastel snowscape. The items to count are clearly distinguished and well within developmental capacity for toddlers. The numerals are used instead of words spelled out. Many adults will wonder why the penguin lives in an igloo, indicating an Arctic environment—and are these penguins Inuit?—and others will privately reflect that snow really wouldn’t be a big deal for the average penguin. While toddlers will probably not trouble themselves with such distractions, there are still better counting board books available. (Board book. 2-3)
