KIRKUS REVIEW

Myrina, heroine of Tomlinson’s The Moon Riders (2006), is back in another tale set in ancient times. The Trojan War is over, Myrina’s husband is dead and she struggles to keep her band of Moon Riders together against a background of struggle, slavery and nomadic life. The premise is a good one, and the story could have been absorbing. Unfortunately, these characters are two dimensional at best, and move around a countryside that could have been rich in detail, but which seems bereft of any depth. It is difficult to care about any of the characters, even those as famous as the seer Cassandra, or the seemingly doomed daughter of Agamemnon, Iphigenia. References to Greek myth and The Iliad are thrown in as spice, but are rarely blended properly. Teen readers hoping for any insight into the mythology of Ancient Greece will be disappointed. (Fiction. 12-15)
