TORCHBEARER OF THE REVOLUTION

There is interesting historical material here, filling a gap in our knowledge and understanding of movements preceding the American Revolution and individuals who were forerunners of Washington. This is the story of Nathaniel Bacon, leader of Bacon's Rebellion, the courageous but abortive effort to overthrow English tyranny in the person of Governor Berkeley of Virginia. The substance is there -- the story is a stirring one -- Bacon is a misunderstood patriot, but Professer Wertenbaker has handled his material from a scholarly point of view rather than a popular one.
