Hell hath frozen over with this cheeky, charming collection that tackles a grand culinary oxymoron: down-home Southern cooking—for vegans!

Southern cuisine has a reputation for being greasy, rib-sticking, belly-warming and, above all, loaded with meat. According to Splint and Doe, all of the above are true—except the meat. With their conjoined cookbooks, they are on a mission to prove that it’s possible to make classic Southern comfort foods without animal products. With recipes like “Chicken-Fried Tofu,” “Pumpkin Fritters” and “Red Velvet Cake,” this is hardly a health book. But where Splint and Doe leave out the meat and dairy, they pack in the flavor—for any vegan tired of bland, tasteless dishes, it’s perfect. They offer “Biscuits and Gravy” with soy sausage, “Vanilla Fudge” with soy milk and “Red Velvet Cake” with margarine. Some of their new dishes are so tantalizing, like “Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burritos,” that even carnivores will find a delicious dish. January 15, 2010 - I still remember the first time I heard Spenser's voice ring out in the opening chapter of The Godwulf Manuscript (1973), as he razzes the college president who's trying to hire him. What's this guy's problem? I thought. Why does he have such an attitude? The attitude, I soon learned, had deep roots...Part of it was a temperamental similarity to Spenser's creator, Robert B. Parker, who died on Jan. 18th at age 77.
