Many of us live in an overscheduled, overstimulated, hypervigilant, and hyperaroused world. That's not breaking news. What we may not understand is that the stress that nips at our heels during the day follows us into the sack at night. And so begins insomnia. Movement therapist and ex-insomniac Krugman cautions that insomnia is no laughing matter; the sleep deprived are not just cranky, but candidates for cardio-vascular disease and depression—in addition to aging faster than the rest of us (not that Krugman doesn't know how to laugh; he notes his "eyes would pop open like a couple of automotive airbags" at 3 p.m. when he had insomnia). Krugman also cautions that his techniques are not for chronic insomniacs—to be treated by doctors—but aids to encourage and amplify the natural processes that enable us to obtain the rest we need. First, he discusses the need for proper daily body movement (he recommends exploring the Feldenkrais Method), exercise, a good diet and meditation. He then offers a detailed examination (with helpful photographs) of the calming and lulling mini-moves that can be deployed both during the day, pre-bed, and when you awaken at night to help you de-stress, re-focus and gentle your body into relaxation. January 15, 2010 - I still remember the first time I heard Spenser's voice ring out in the opening chapter of The Godwulf Manuscript (1973), as he razzes the college president who's trying to hire him. What's this guy's problem? I thought. Why does he have such an attitude? The attitude, I soon learned, had deep roots...Part of it was a temperamental similarity to Spenser's creator, Robert B. Parker, who died on Jan. 18th at age 77.
