Lionsgate released a trailer for its upcoming film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid.

McFadden’s novel, first released in 2022 by the digital publisher Bookouture, tells the story of Millie, an ex-convict who takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for a wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew, and discovers that the family harbors troubling secrets. The novel was a sensation on TikTok and spawned two sequels, The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching.

The film adaptation stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, Amanda Seyfried as Nina, and Brandon Sklenar as Andrew; other cast members include Michele Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins, and Megan Ferguson. It is written by Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Vampire Diaries) and directed by Paul Feig (A Simple Favor); executive producers include McFadden, Sweeney, and Seyfried.

In the trailer, set to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” Seyfried interviews Sweeney, asking her, “Why do you want this job?” Sweeney replies, “I just really enjoy being a housemaid, for the right families, of course.”

Later, an unsmiling Seyfried tells Sweeney, “I want you to feel safe here.” Sweeney says, “I do!” and Seyfried gives her an old-fashioned key for her bedroom. The trailer then shows images of Seyfried and Sklenar at a dinner party, Sweeney looking at a creepy dollhouse, and a bloodstained Sweeney eating a sandwich. It ends with a scene from the initial job interview, with Seyfried telling Sweeney, “I have a really good feeling about this, Millie.”

The Housemaid is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 19.
