A sequel to the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue is officially in the works, Amazon MGM Studios announced in a news release.

McQuiston’s bestselling novel, published in 2019 by St. Martin’s Griffin, follows the romance between Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of U.S. President Ellen Claremont, and Prince Henry, a British royal. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus praised the book as “a clever, romantic, sexy love story.”

The 2023 film adaptation of the novel—directed by Matthew López, starring Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Henry—earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding television movie. In a review of the film, Kirkus’ David Rapp found the chemistry between the leads “often unconvincing.”

The sequel to the film, titled Red, White & Royal Wedding, will be directed by Jamie Babbit, who helmed the cult favorite But I’m a Cheerleader and episodes of series including Only Murders in the Building, A League of Their Own, and Gilmore Girls. The screenplay will be written by Gemma Burgess, López, and McQuiston.

The plot of the movie is being kept under wraps, but Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Zakhar Perez and Galitzine will reprise their roles.

“Working with this team to bring Red, White & Royal Blue to life has been a dream come true, and I hope readers and watchers alike will love how the story continues in the sequel,” McQuiston said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Matthew for all his hard work on the first movie and in co-creating this new story with me, and I know that Jamie has the vision, wit, and tenderness to take great care of Alex and Henry from here.”
