The book opens with Madison, one of “the girls of August,” acknowledging the title as "a silly name for four women adrift in middle age." If the "girls" acted like women of substance, the listener might agree. With the lack of fully fleshed-out characters, narrator Kate Reading's experience and honest voice carry the story and enliven the insipid girls. She adroitly handles the disclosure of intimate details. Her portrayal of Baby, the newest member of the group, has a whine that truly reflects her personality. Overall, Reading gives the characters some dynamism as she captures each woman’s life crisis.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
