This novel, by the son of Maya Angelou, follows the hardscrabble life of a young black man from the Louisiana bayous to the battlefields of WWI and back to the segregated South. The primary reason a listener chooses an audiobook is to hear a world brought vividly to life. This novel is international in scope, and it linguistically crosses the black diaspora, but Dion Graham delivers his performance in a virtual monotone. This means that the German soldiers, the African-Americans from Harlem, and the black hero from Louisiana all sound alike. The listener's imagination is probably a better narrator.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
