Books by Julie Jensen

Released: Oct. 17, 1995

This entry in the Beginning Sports series is a straightforward guide to basic gymnastics, illustrated throughout with dynamic full-color photographs of young athletes in action. Jensen advises the aspiring gymnast to find a good coach and to expect long hours of practice. She doesn't intend to replace that regime; instead, her book provides an informative—even inspiring—introduction to the sport. Jensen begins with a brief history of gymnastics, highlighting some its famous practitioners, then moves on to clear descriptions of the apparatus and basic moves involved. Each of these latter is illustrated with helpful sequential photographs. Jensen stresses safety and the cumulative nature of skill-building. She defines differences between the boys' and girls' gymnastics, representing both sexes equally. Final chapters discuss competitive gymnastics—getting started, different levels of competition, what to expect at a meet—and finish up with a look at some advanced moves.
