THE MASTER VIOLINMAKER by Paul Fleisher
MUSIC AND THE ARTS
Released: Sept. 1, 1993

An engaging, nicely photographed visit to the shop of John Lattimore, a violinmaker in Richmond, Virginia. Frequent color photos—several on each spread—and a brief text take the reader through selecting the wood, cutting, shaving, gluing, and varnishing a fine violin. Although the book does what it sets out to do, a little more about physics (the vibrating string; wanted and unwanted resonances) and music (the instrument's range and place in the orchestra) would have broadened the scope here. Still, as a close-up of an unusual and interesting occupation, well done. (Nonfiction. 8+) Read full book review >
