The of English Church history will find this series of twenty-five portraits of English figures who lived from the 6th to the 16th century of moderate interest. They are too short to afford much opportunity for any ""profile in depth"", yet they are sufficiently provocative to prompt the interested to search them out in more ample . In fact, however, some of these sketches present figures of who are little known, and who might easily be overlooked even by the serious student of the period. Herein lies the book's chief value, plus the over-all picture it gives of the age as represented by diverse saints and scholars. The book is well written, and best serve as collateral reading to a more thorough study. The author is of Modern History in the University of Cambridge.
