Louise Fayette, a current favorite of the weak and irresolute Louis XIII becomes the center of an elaborate intrig inspired by the powerful Cardinal Richelieu-Louise because of her youthful guide and ignorance of the affairs of court, has grown for the dominated king. Richelleu opposes this and makes plans to Louise as a person among the various factions of the court and at the same time persuade the unfortunate girl that she has a vocation as a nun. Aided by both the and the enemies of the Cardinal, the plan is brilliantly successful and to the end all the villains are satisfied. Even the victim herself in painfully realizing that real life offers no ready formulas, gains, a personal, if private, triumph a skilled and knowledgeable writer but the which form the of the novel would tax even the most dedicated of readers.
