A patient re-examination of a case (which, like the earlier Only in New England has authentic origins) also relies on the solid furnishings of the time, 1902, and the gentility of two traditions, Victorian and Southern, which did much to obscure the real facts and confuse the issue. Wade Boodle, the first white man in fifty years to receive the capital verdict, was hung as a rake rather than a murderer. Brodie, a prominent citizen of Amityburg and a nominee for Governor, was not initially suspected in the decease of his wife when she was bolled alive in her bathtub, claimed they were attacked by an unknown , and only after mob violence and an indifferent investigation, was arrested. In the trial here which lends momentum to the rather poky prologue of slow moving, small town testimony, and after a later review and re-interpretation of the case, the irony of the actual misrepresentation and miscarriage of justice is revealed.... A substantial presentation which depends more on its gaslit morals and mores and local detail than the crime itself for its interest.
