At first quick look at this eminently timely book on Christian Morality the conclusion can be easily drawn that what Canon Leclereq is saying is obviously, true -- and that here is a concise review of what the Christian believes. But actually it is more than that. There is a depth here which is gleaned only after a rereading. After the author disposes of what appears to be a special ""gripe"" of his in the area of teaching of the subject in the colleges, he proceeds to provide the serious-minded --whether in or out of school -- with what proves to be a handbook and reference on Christian morality in today's world. The stress throughout the book is on the importance of the Christian notion of ""good"" as the basis of ethics rather than sin. Canon demonstrates and with force that man attains happiness through good, perfection and reduction to the One. What a person should do in a given circumstance is not spelled out. But all who consult Christ and the Modern Conscience will have little excuse for acting any way except according to the norms of Christ. For this reason alone, this excellent book merits as wide a readership as this need commands.
