He is careful to make it clear that it is not a religion, nor a nation, nor a race that we are dealing with but a people with a common cultural heritage and a shared point of view, nevertheless Cordis emphasises the fact that the future of the Jews is wrapped up in their religion, however modernised and adapted to American conditions. This religion concerns itself not so much with creeds as with religious practices and ethical standards, but is nevertheless vital to the preservation of Judaism in America as elsewhere. An unusually valuable book on a subject not often dealt with as extensively and as trenchantly.
