Abelin, a small fishing village in the south of France. A bus accident- of which she is one of the few survivors- is attributed to Vaillant by some who oppose his influences and his hopes to become mayor by suggesting that he is subversive and guilty of the sabotage which has caused the accident. Mary, who is by now sure of his faith, and his love for her, goes to save him through Marrakech- a mute- and while Marrakech is killed, he leaves behind him the evidence of Vaillant's innocence... A political parable, the mood is dedicated but the tone is tremulous. Disappointing - from Kay Boyle.
