A first rate job, the best thing Mr. Mason has given us for years. It is an 18th century historical romance, the colorful rendering of the love of Sophia Dorothea of Zell and Hanover, wife of George Louis who afterwards became George I of England, and of Philip Konigsmark. They were parted as children -- Philip fled England -- and years later returned and fell passionately and tragically in love with the unattainable. He manages to infuse the old story with a sense of mounting excitement, he embroiders a rich pattern of court intrigue and palace policies. A book that should appeal to the modern parallel of the Ouida fans.
