THE PURSUIT OF PLENTY

An optimistic argument for the future of national- and universal -- resources based on the success of TVA, this is also an argument for adjustment to, rather than conquest of -- nature, when you take man as the most important natural resource. It grinds an axe against the ""old fashioned man"", the vested interests, monopolistic constriction which has limited needed production, socially important regional development and laid waists to and damaged resources; it points with same to the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army in its antiquated methods of dealing with the Missouri River Valley; it describes the contest over electricity, oil, steel -- and water -- when private profit takes precedence over public interests; it shows the dangers of expedient measures when an understanding of the importance of the overall and fundamental issues are involved; it follows the recent lines of scientific discoveries, which, if taken in conjunction with vital statistics and man's ability to construct as well as destroy, will secure sufficient supplies for the future.
