A collection of nine dog stories, brief, well-developed with a minimum of sentimentality. There are stories of brave dogs -- a great Irish wolfhound who towed a drifting row boat to shore, a brave-hearted setter who outscored a champion pointer in a field trial, a dog who rescued a drowning man and a dog who died fighting a wild cat (we might have omitted this violent tale). Then some lovable clowns -- Lucky who was never a lady, the Tramp who gave a blood transfusion, and Barker Blake, who led the dogs in the neighborhood after Sammy the paperboy in a parade to city hall. With the exception mentioned above, a readable affectionate tribute to dogs and their young owners.
