A fine piece of work, this history through interpretation of general movements, chiefly economic and social. The author has sacrificed detail to scope, giving in broad outline the development of various forces, -- religious, political, industrial, commercial, military. Clear and simply written and fairly objective. Not a history in terms of personalities, little of the human and anecdotal aspects. For this reason it won't appeal to the general reader, but is designed rather for the student of social and economic trends. Brings history up to present critical situation.
