KIRKUS REVIEW

This can almost be viewed as a literary detective story in which all the ues to Shakespeare's character and the facts of his life are found in the lines of the plays, sonnets and verse dramas. Some will take issue with Rowse on conclusions that he has drawn and stated as incontrovertible facts, but his arguments are well buttressed and his convictions made plausible. Its immediate market will be found primarily among students, and the book makes an interesting addition to the always in demand biographies of Shakespeare.
