GENERAL CARGO

A.P. Herbert always has something to say and a knack of saying it entertainingly, this collection of bits of verse (mostly humorous) and prose, sheer entertainment, critical commentary, ponderings on the ways of life, cryptic passages on matters political and social, satire, the Mr. Mafferty bits (an English Mr. Dooler) -- this collection, I am afraid, wont enhance his reputation with the average American reader. You must know your England and know your Herbert to appreciate the fine points of most of it, for it is very, very English in its specific qualities and its general atmosphere. Sell to your Anglophiles, but expect a limited market generally.
