In some ways, these have a wider appeal than The Shropshire Lad for they are on the whole less pastoral and frequently more profound, while never losing the quality that brought him lamp, simplicity blended with fluent facility of expression. A few recapture his knack of revealing the English countryside. Pure lyricism without the marring note of the author's too personal emotions. Really great in its simplicity.
