A reissue after fifteen years of a book that is highly specialized but essential in its field, that of the bird lovers who are not content with visual recognition, but want to be able to identify birds from their songs. Confessedly not as scientific in matters of terminology and classification and nomenclature as today's ornithologists demand, the author has conformed to new standards in the material added in a new section, but feels that those aspects of the subject are available elsewhere. His aim is to link the bird and the songs and call notes. The vital part of this book is devoted to his techniques of recording bird songs, with field trips as a touchstone. Within 34 orders and species he has included some 200 songs, and through his unique system has indicated time, pitch, , quality, phonetics, not in the conventional musical notation but in a pracal musical shorthand, peculiarly applicable to the needs. The key should help not only experts but beginners to fix the main characteristics of song and the points of difference. With each bird, additional data is supplied as to range, habitat, seasons -- important items for use of this new sort of field guide, to the songs and calls of the landbirds of northeastern and to some degree southern United States.
