The third string of the distinguished critic and poet's short stories, chosen by the author. The first volume, published in 1962, had the stories Van Doren liked best; the second volume, in 1965, had those he liked next best. These, however, appear to be competent specimens of the realist tradition. Of the forty-two stories, eighteen have never appeared in book form. This is the final volume.
