A collection of short stories which indulge the notional, the fortuitous, and on occasion a softer sentiment- these pursue many themes- return from the present to the past... Of a frightened little man of forty and the birthday party occasioned by the birth of a first son; of Hannibal, reduced to human terms; of the chance creation of a screen star; an accidental encounter with murder; a marital misjudgment of ""dear old George""; a case of blackmail- and a confession of murder. These, and others, rely on circumstance for their usually ironic turn of event, on the English tradition for their precise turn of phrase, and chiefly on Milno's name for an audience.
