SPIRO OF THE SPONGE FLEET

Descriptions of a faraway world-- the Greek isle of Kalymnos which faces the mountains of Turkey-- are appropriately filled with sunlight, salt water and sudden excitement. Sixteen-year-old Spiro works in the boatyard, but like most young islanders, he has one desire--to be a diver. His brother Costa is second est diver on a large sponge boat, and gives Spiro some encouragement, while his widowed mother (her husband died of the bends) discourages him and tries to entice the boy to accept a job on land. Spiro proves himself worthy of a six month sea voyage, and, in the end, chooses the treacherous diver's life over the more lucrative land-bound one. Well told, vivid adventure not beyond the bounds of believability.
