The essays in this book constitute an interesting and enlightening sociological study of minority Catholicism in fourteen different places of the world, - England, India, Norway, the U.S.A., Lebanon, Australia, Wales, Japan, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Brazil, Egypt, Southern Africa and the Congo. The essays are for the most part written by natives of the separate countries discussed. The general aim of the contributors is ""to show how far Catholicism is integrated with the national character and national life of their countries and what this integration feels like to them personally."" A few of the articles are too exclusively historical or political in nature, most are sociologically revealing, and all are written on a high level of balanced criticism. The editor's introduction, however, is the best part of the book, containing some unusually incisive comments on the universalism and particularism of Catholicism. A welcome addition to the growing number of books devoted to Catholic self-assessment, this volume should interest the general reader, the religious sociologist, the student of missiology and every self-critical Catholic individual.
