by Agnar Thordarson ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 10, 1996
This engagingly romantic, borderline-sentimental novel offers a pleasant picture of life on an island off the coast of Iceland in 1973: When the abiding presence of US troops continues to fuel anti-Vietnam War protest, Iceland's ""Cod War"" with British fishing vessels is in full swing, and, just for variety's sake, a volcano erupts. Thordarson doesn't eschew thinly veiled social commentary, but his young protagonist, Andri, is a refreshingly unheroic sort whose ingenuousness in matters of politics and sex, among other confusions, makes him fine company. A highly likable coming-of-age tale.
