Remember Peggy Bacon's The Terrible Nuisance -- and how it was heralded as top ranking realistic writing about and for children? Well, I think Elijah the Fishbite is even better. I just loved it, perhaps more than others, who won't recognize the very special problems of a rectory family in keeping out of trouble under the eyes of unrelenting parishioners. Elijah was an irresistible kitten, or so the rectory family thought , and eventually Elijah won over even the terrible Mrs. Halliday and Nannie and Stebby, the sexton. The story is checkful of humor and real understanding and the pictures by Meg Wohlberg show that she knows children and can draw, two qualities often too little appreciated.
